Essay 6: Revision
Type of Paper: Revision
Length: 1000 words
Due Tuesday, November 20, by midnight
The last paper of the class is a revision (choose a paper from one of the first four assigned). The paper should include a letter of intent as well as the revision. The letter of intent will be printed out and handed in. The revision will be a reposting of your essay—make sure to do a new posting. Don’t just revise and then repost. Post it as essay number “6” by Sunday, December 9.
Letter of Intent:
This letter (roughly 250 words) should discuss the weaknesses and the merits of the essay you will be revising. You should have at least one paragraph devoted to each. I recommend that you look over my grading rubric as a way to guide your evaluation—but you should not only attend to what is on the rubric. Try and formulate your own opinion of your work.
There should also be a final paragraph that sets out the criteria for your revision—you should have a specific plan for what you are going to do and you should state that clearly.
Note: The most basic revision is a grammar/syntax revision. Consider that the “D” level bar. An “A” level revision might address issues of clarity, suggestions for ways the content could be improved, style issues, organizational issues, etc. In other words, a much more comprehensive plan. This letter is due Thursday, November 29, in class (but you may have an extension until Tuesday, December 4, but you must request this in writing). You must turn in a hard-copy of your letter, in class. No exceptions. It is worth 30% of your revision grade.
You will also be required to critique two of your peers’ essays. The critique should be roughly 200 words long. You should pick two things that you think the essay does well, and two areas that you think the student could work on. You should provide reasons for all four points. These are due December 2, by midnight. These critiques are worth 20% of your revision grade.
